Fellow Carter Move Mug – Move it without spilling it
Coffee people are picky people. Out of all the possible types of hobbyists they might be the most notorious for being a bit snobby. However, that aloof selective nature can come in handy when you’re considering a market that has an abundance of new products every year all promising to elevate your experience of home brewing to levels not yet reached. Even the most basic of equipment is analyzed with scrutiny.
Take for example the humble mug. The vessel that holds the precious liquid that has been painstakingly, picked, processed, roasted, ground and brewed to perfection. It would be a shame if the mug didn’t live up to its contents, right? I can think of one brand that consistently meets the demands of coffee hobbyists and professionals alike: Fellow. Their products have made a wave in the coffee industry with some of their most popular products such as the Stagg Electric Kettle and the Ode Brew Grinder. However, their most accessible product is what I think is their shining star. The Carter Move Mug.
There are a few things I consider important in a travel coffee mug. The first is flavor transfer. There’s nothing I dislike more in a brew than an off-putting metallic flavor. Thankfully the Carter features a ceramic coated interior, giving you the benefit of essentially no flavor transfer just like if you were drinking from your favorite mug at home. The second is how easy it is to drink on the move (hence the Move name). Just because I take my time to brew my coffee doesn’t mean I don’t have anywhere to be, so I’m often heading out the door with my first cup. The Carter’s snap in splash guard allows me to sip my coffee from any side of the mug without worrying if a rogue bump in the road is going to send hot coffee into my lap. I’m a certified klutz, so this is a big one for me. In combination the thin lip design makes it pleasurable to drink even when I’m in a hurry. An obvious call out in any travel mug is the temperature retention. And while a lot of travel mugs boast a long heat retention time, the 6 hours you get from the Carter Move Mug is more than enough, ensuring that you get to enjoy your brew at the perfect temp all the way to work.
As a designer and coffee person the cherry on top for me is the aesthetic value that Fellow brings to the table. You’ll find few compromises in the battle between function and beauty with their products. The mug is sleek with a matte finish, minimalist lines and curves that look good in the hand and in the cup holder. Truly a sight that makes coffee nerds drool.
Now say the Carter hasn’t ticked all your boxes. Say you wish for more versatility in the lid or maybe the ability to add a straw for iced drinks. Get this – they make those too. Fellow has different lids to customize your experience, including lids with carry handles, sliding tops for easy one-handed use, and of course, a lid for sipping on your favorite iced single origin.
